Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, marking the start of the riding season in many states.

Motorcyclists are at a disadvantage on the road, as their vehicles are smaller and can be difficult to see in traffic. Motorcycle riders are overrepresented in fatal accidents, making up 15% of all traffic fatalities in 2024, according to the latest National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data.

Tips for motorists:

  • Yield to motorcyclists, especially when turning at intersections.

  • Continuously scan for motorcyclists, pedestrians, and bicyclists and proceed with caution.

  • Allow for plenty of space around a motorcycle when following in traffic.

  • Never drive distracted.

  • Look for motorcyclists when turning at intersections, especially when visibility is obscured.

Avoid Shocking Consequences – Commit to Electrical Safety

May is National Electrical Safety Month. This annual campaign focuses on raising awareness about electrical risks and reducing related accidents. While electricity is a part of everyday life, that doesn’t mean that homeowners can afford to become complacent about its dangers. This May, remember the following tips for electrical safety in your home:

Check equipment. Regularly check the condition of cords, devices, appliances, and outlets, as even minor defects or damage can lead to severe shock injuries or pose serious fire hazards.

Plug in appliances appropriately. Make sure major appliances, such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, and dishwashers, are plugged directly into a wall receptacle outlet rather than using an extension cord or power strip. Refrain from plugging more than one heat-producing appliance, such as a coffee maker and a space heater, into the same outlet at the same time.

Unplug when not in use. When devices and small appliances are not in use, unplug them. This not only reduces the risk of electrical accidents but may also help you save on your energy bill.

Stow cords safely. Do not keep loose cords running across rooms, hallways, or other areas where they may be stepped on, tripped over, or damaged. Do not rely on extension cords as part of your home’s permanent arrangements.

Be wary of water. Keep electrical devices and cords away from water, and make sure areas around outlets are dry. Avoid handling electronics if your hands are wet or even damp.

If you have concerns about your home’s electrical systems or are planning any projects, it’s best to consult with and hire a qualified electrician.

Auto Insurance for Storm Damage

Severe weather often reminds us how quickly road conditions can change. Spring storms can bring hail, wind-blown debris, falling branches, and flash flooding, all of which can damage vehicles.

Comprehensive insurance is designed to help cover damage from non-collision losses, including weather events.

Several optional coverages can make a comprehensive claim less stressful. These add-ons don’t replace comprehensive insurance, but they can close gaps and reduce out-of-pocket costs:

  • Roadside assistance can help if you’re stranded due to a flat tire or a dead battery.

  • Towing coverage can help pay the bill if your vehicle must be towed after an accident.

  • Gap insurance can help cover the difference between the insurer’s payout and the total amount owed to your lienholder if your car is a total loss after a covered accident or incident.

  • Rental reimbursement can pay for a rental car while yours is in the shop after a covered loss.

Review Your Auto Insurance

Many drivers assume that damage from spring weather is covered, only to discover that their policy doesn’t include comprehensive coverage or that certain endorsements could have been helpful in the aftermath.

Stay Safe in and Around the Pool This Summer

Summer is just around the corner. For many people, sunny days are often spent swimming. Whether you’re heading to a public venue or have your own backyard pool, safety is paramount.

Before heading out for your first day at the swimming pool this summer, remember these guidelines:

  • Always make sure an adult is supervising children in the pool.

  • Never run on the pool deck, even if the surface appears dry.

  • When entering shallow water, do so feet-first.

  • Steer clear of drains, as hair and garments could become tangled in them.

  • Make sure a first-aid kit and someone certified in CPR are present.
