We are celebrating 51 years in Business! We could not have achieved this without our clients, business partners, referral partners, employees, family, friends, and everyone who has supported us over the last 51 years. Thank you!

Hail Damage

Often, after a hailstorm, roof contractors will go door to door trying to drum up Business. This happened to me, Brittany Scott. If you suspect damage, call your insurance company and review your insurance declaration page. Often, wind and hail have a different deductible than other perils. Do not sign anything until you have spoken with your insurance company and found a reportable roofing company.

How to determine if you have hail damage?

The size of hail needed to damage a roof depends on the roofing material and its condition. As a general guideline, hail measuring about 1¼ inches across is often required to damage heavy architectural asphalt shingles or wood shake roofs. Lighter-weight asphalt shingles may be affected by hail around 1 inch in diameter. Hail smaller than 1 inch usually causes damage only when shingles are already aged, brittle, or otherwise deteriorated.

If you suspect your roof has been exposed to damaging hail, it’s a good idea to look for signs of impact on other property before filing a claim. Hail capable of harming roofing materials often leaves visible marks on items such as:

Vehicles

Wood fencing

Window shutters

Exterior siding and trim

You may also notice an unusual amount of roofing granules collecting near gutters or downspouts. While this can indicate that the roof was affected by hail, granule accumulation alone does not necessarily confirm hail damage. This preliminary inspection can help determine whether a professional roof evaluation may be warranted.

Here are two articles about hail damage and when it’s important to get it repaired.

 Renters Insurance

Many people are renting or living in a dwelling they do not own. Under the owner’s Insurance policy, your items may not be covered. Not all lessors or landlords require renters’ insurance.

Your building owner is only required to carry insurance for the structure. Usually, covering everything outside “your walls” is their responsibility, while everything inside is yours to ensure. All your furniture, electronics, appliances, clothing, and jewelry are uninsured unless you purchase a renter’s policy.

If you’ve considered it all, you might think that the “stuff” you have accumulated isn’t worth that much. It may or may not be worth anything in dollar terms, but that’s very different from how much it would cost you to replace it. Buying a new bedroom set, clothing, or a computer can cost much more than you think.

You’ll be surprised at how affordable renters insurance can be. Besides covering all your stuff, it protects you from liability if someone gets injured in your home. So, in the unfortunate event that you’re sued and the judgment goes against you, the renter’s policy will cover you up to the policy limits.

Renter policy coverages:

Personal property – the value to replace your items in the dwelling

You can increase your personal property coverage to include high-value items such as art and jewelry.

Loss of use can help pay for the additional costs you might incur for reasonable housing and living expenses if a covered event makes your house temporarily uninhabitable. At the same time, it is being repaired or rebuilt.

Personal liability  – help pay for another person’s medical bills or repairs to their property if you’re found legally responsible for their injuries or property damage. Renters’ liability coverage may also help cover your legal expenses if you’re sued over an incident that occurs in the place you’re renting.

Medical payments – If someone is injured on your property, this will pay for their medical bills.

Tomato Cucumber Salad

It seems like cucumbers grew well in everyone’s garden this year, so here is a recipe to make to use them up.

Ingredients

1 sliced cucumber

2 to 3 large ripe tomatoes, diced

½ medium red onion, thinly sliced

1 tablespoon fresh herbs (any combination of parsley, basil, and/or dill), optional

2 tablespoons of olive oil

1 tablespoon red wine vinegar

salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and toss well.

Refrigerate for at least 20 minutes before serving.

I often add Avocado to mine to make it a more filling meal.
