What are Electrical panels?
Every building with power has electrical panels to control the flow of electricity throughout the structure. Since electrical hazards are among the most common safety hazards found during business and residential inspections, facility managers and homeowners must maintain the electrical panels to minimize electrical safety issues.
Risks
Electrical panels contain electrical currents, posing serious risks to people and structures. Age, corrosion, faulty installation, and damage—including damage from water or rodents—can compromise the effectiveness of an electrical panel, resulting in:
Fire hazards—A damaged or exposed electrical panel could cause a fire, resulting in property damage, injuries, or death.
Shock hazards—Contact with a faulty electrical panel may result in severe injury or death from electrocution. Poorly labeled breakers can also lead to accidents involving people unaware that power is surging through the panel.
Recalled panels
Insurance company inspections are finding that many homes and commercial buildings have recalled panels or panels that may have been recalled. The recalled panels pose a fire hazard.
The following manufacturers have had recalls:
· Schneider Electric, the panels were manufactured at a specific plant between February 1st, 2020, and January 12th, 2022.
Data Codes between 200561 and 220233 are included, although not all panels in this line are affected.
· Federal Pacific Electric (FPE)
· +Stab-Lok panels
· Zinsco panels, also known as GTE Sylvania-Zinsco panels
· Challenger panels built by the Challenger Electrical Equipment Corp or Eaton/Cutler-Hammer
· Pushmatic
If you have one of the listed panels above, your insurance policy may be non-renewed as well, and if you are trying to get a new policy, it might be impossible.
Finding the manufacturer’s name:
To find the manufacturer of your electrical panel, look for a label or marking on the inside of the panel door or on the panel itself. Most panels have a sticker or plate detailing the brand, model, and electrical specifications.
